Multidisciplinary Approach to Journal Club with a faculty of experts fortnightly

School students in Year 11 and 12 who are studying at a school in East Kent and may be interested in following a career in Medicine are invited to apply for a place on the MedStart Plus work experience block week, provided they are over the age of 16 and have previously attended one of the MedStart4U taster days held at the Trust. Attendance on one of the block weeks will be guided by the Trust Work Experience Policy so all guidelines will be followed while students are at the Trust in a hospital setting.
We are working in collaboration with the East Kent CCG Group to arrange these block weeks so the students will have the opportunity to attend work experience in a GP practice in addition to their hospital experience.

In February 2020, the PaCES Clinical Day provided an immersive, patient-centred biomedical workplace experience for a group of Stage 2 biosciences undergraduates, having been developed during summer 2019 and piloted with a small group of biosciences MSc students the previous November.
PaCES aims to empower more students to make better-informed study and career choices through contextualising their learning with an exciting, interactive, biomedical workplace experience. PaCES used new live-link technology to allow students to remotely observe surgery live in real-time. The live-link technology gave Kent Biosciences students unprecedented access to the surgical environment, allowing students to simultaneously ‘see what the surgeon sees’ and interact with the surgical team during the surgery. The surgical observation was complemented by mini-talks delivered by a diverse set of clinical experts and visits from former patients who shared their experiences of this surgery. Students were surveyed before and after the experience. Data is currently being collated for analysis framed around interest theory in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the project against its stated aims.

The Urology Department hosts Health Technology and Innovation Meetings several times a year.

The Department works closely with the NIHR and has a strong research portfolio.

The Department offers Research and Innovation Opportunites and has a high academic throughput. The Department is closely tied with the NIHR, University of Kent, Christ Church Canterbury University, Kent and Medway Medical School & Kings College London.
